Grindex pumps tackle demanding dewatering conditions in Zambia’s Copperbelt

Mining operations across Zambia’s Copperbelt continue to face increasingly complex dewatering challenges, from abrasive slurries to heavy sludge accumulation. In response, Integrated Pump Technology is seeing growing demand for its Grindex range of dewatering, slurry, and sludge pumps.

According to Alfred Kelsey, Sales Manager at Integrated Pump Technology, the rugged design and versatility of Grindex submersible pumps have made them well suited to the harsh conditions typical of underground mining environments.

Proven performance in sludge handling

One notable recent application, delivered in partnership with Kitwe-based distributor Industrial Equipment Services (IES), involved the successful deployment of a 14 kW Grindex Bravo 400 pump to address severe sludge build-up in underground dams.

“Our customer was facing a critical issue, where sediment accumulation had significantly reduced dam capacity,” Kelsey explains. “Traditional dewatering pumps are not designed to handle such dense slurry, but the Grindex Bravo 400 proved highly effective in this application.”

The Bravo 400’s hard-iron construction, combined with its high abrasion resistance and integrated agitator, enables it to re-suspend settled solids efficiently, allowing for effective sludge removal. Its IP68 rating also ensures reliable operation at depths of up to 20 metres.

Growing demand across the Copperbelt

Kelsey notes a sharp increase in demand for Grindex dewatering solutions across the region, driven by their reliability and ease of use.

“The quality and durability of Grindex pumps are key differentiators,” he says. “In addition, the smaller units in the 2.2 kW to 18 kW range feature integrated smart systems, offering true plug-and-play functionality.”

These systems enable fully automated operation with built-in protection features, reducing the need for operator intervention and improving overall efficiency on site.

For larger units, ranging from 25 kW to 90 kW, external control and monitoring panels are supplied, providing enhanced operational control in more demanding applications.

Engineered for abrasive environments

The versatility of the Grindex range extends to its ability to handle highly abrasive conditions. Pumps can be configured with nitrile rubber or polyurethane linings, depending on site requirements.

“A popular configuration is the use of internal polyurethane components combined with a stainless steel casing,” Kelsey explains. “This not only improves wear resistance but also reduces overall weight.”

The lightweight stainless steel construction is particularly advantageous in underground mining environments, where equipment often needs to be transported manually. Features such as split handles further enhance portability, allowing pumps to be safely handled by two people.

Strong local support network

Beyond product performance, Integrated Pump Technology attributes much of its success in the Copperbelt to its strong local support capabilities.

“Our partnership with IES ensures that customers benefit from highly trained technicians, OEM-aligned service standards, and access to a well-equipped workshop,” says Kelsey.

This support structure enables rapid turnaround times for repairs and maintenance, from complete pump rebuilds to minor servicing tasks. On-site technical assistance is also available when required.

In addition, the company maintains strategic inventory levels in the region, ensuring that critical spare parts are readily available to minimise downtime and keep operations running smoothly.

Reliable solutions for demanding applications

As mining operations continue to evolve and face more challenging conditions, the need for robust, adaptable dewatering solutions remains critical. With its combination of durable design, application flexibility, and strong local support, the Grindex pump range is proving to be a reliable choice for operators across Zambia’s Copperbelt.
