OHL Gutermuth Supplies Specialised 4-Way Valves for Advanced Gas Treatment Plant

As the global energy industry continues to invest in cleaner and more efficient gas processing technologies, innovations in industrial valve engineering are playing an increasingly important role in improving plant performance, operational reliability and environmental sustainability. Although this project is based in Canada, the technologies being deployed offer valuable insights for Africa’s growing natural gas sector, where countries such as Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Algeria, Egypt and Senegal are expanding gas processing infrastructure.

OHL Gutermuth Industrial Valves has supplied customised heated 4-way valves for Canada’s first new gas treatment plant commissioned in more than three decades. The specialised valves have been engineered to operate under demanding process conditions while delivering reliable temperature control and long-term operational performance.

Designed with both internal and external heating jackets, the valves help maintain stable process temperatures, ensuring efficient gas treatment even under challenging operating conditions. Their advanced design supports improved process reliability while minimising operational risks associated with temperature fluctuations.

The project also showcases the implementation of the innovative SmartSulf process, an advanced gas treatment technology developed to achieve higher sulphur recovery rates while significantly reducing plant complexity. Compared with conventional Claus or Tail Gas Treatment Unit (TGTU) systems, SmartSulf requires fewer components, lowering both capital investment and operating costs while simplifying maintenance and improving overall plant efficiency.

OHL Gutermuth’s customised 4-way valves have been specifically engineered to integrate seamlessly with the SmartSulf process, supporting precise process control and contributing to higher levels of safety, efficiency and environmental performance.

As Africa continues to develop its natural gas resources and invest in new processing facilities, technologies that improve sulphur recovery, reduce emissions and enhance operational efficiency will become increasingly important. Modern valve solutions capable of operating reliably under harsh industrial conditions can help African gas processors improve plant availability, reduce maintenance requirements and support more sustainable energy production.

With decades of engineering expertise, OHL Gutermuth continues to develop specialised valve technologies that support cleaner, safer and more efficient gas treatment operations worldwide, offering solutions that could contribute to the future development of Africa’s expanding natural gas industry.
