Amarinth Secures £500,000 Innovate UK Grant to Advance LNG Pump Technology

Amarinth has been awarded a £500,000 grant from Innovate UK to develop a next-generation multistage centrifugal pump for cryogenic liquefied natural gas (LNG) applications.

The award follows Amarinth’s earlier £250,000 Innovate UK grant, which supported the refinement of its design and manufacturing processes for energy-efficient pumps—work that culminated in the successful launch of a molten sulphur pump.

With this new funding, Amarinth will deliver a production-ready, commercially viable LNG pump designed to meet the industry’s evolving requirements and accelerate the shift to cleaner, low-temperature fuels.

Drawing on its extensive cryogenic expertise—including the replacement of obsolete single-stage pumps—Amarinth will design and prototype a multistage pump capable of handling LNG at around -162°C. The pump will feature CFD-optimised hydraulics and bespoke impellers, with each stage engineered for peak performance.

“This project builds on our cryogenic experience, such as replacing a legacy argon pump operating at -186°C, and our long-standing track record in bespoke design,” said Oliver Brigginshaw, Managing Director of Amarinth. “By applying modern engineering to multistage cryogenic pumps, we aim to set a new standard in LNG pumping. LNG represents a lower-carbon alternative to traditional fossil fuels—but only if it is handled with maximum safety and efficiency. Our vision is to deliver a highly efficient, reliable solution that can also evolve to support hydrogen and carbon capture applications.”
