Nine-year-old Edie King from Lancashire has been recognised at the Young British Farming Awards 2026 for her dedication to sheep farming, livestock care and animal welfare.
Edie was named Junior Young Handler of the Year in the six-to-10 age category at the national awards, which recognise young people making a contribution to agriculture across the United Kingdom.
Young Farmer Recognised for Livestock Skills
Judges praised Edie’s commitment to sheep showing and the care she provides for her animals.
Her involvement extends from the lambing season through to preparing sheep for agricultural shows. She is responsible for activities including washing, trimming and preparing her sheep for competition.
Edie has already achieved a collection of championships and rosettes through her participation in agricultural shows.
Hands-On Approach to Sheep Farming
Away from competitions, Edie contributes to the day-to-day care of livestock.
Her responsibilities include feeding, bedding, worming and foot care, giving her practical experience in managing sheep and maintaining animal welfare.
She has also developed an interest in sheep genetics and breeding, highlighting the breadth of her involvement in livestock farming at a young age.
