SKF Lincoln Automatic Lubrication Systems Improve Mobile Mining Machine Reliability

SKF Lincoln automatic lubrication systems are helping improve reliability, uptime and maintenance efficiency for mobile mining machinery operating at a Zambian gold mine.

A prominent South African industrial group operating under contract at a Zambian gold mine has secured 45 Lincoln P203 8 kg progressive lubrication systems from SKF for leading-brand mobile machines.

The systems are designed to provide reliable and consistent lubrication to critical machine components, helping the mine operator reduce downtime, extend component life and improve maintenance safety.

Automatic Lubrication Supports Mining Uptime

Mining operations depend on mobile machinery delivering reliable performance in demanding conditions. Effective lubrication of critical points such as bearings, pins and bushings is therefore essential for maintaining equipment availability.

The Lincoln P203 8 kg progressive system automatically delivers consistent, metered quantities of grease to critical lubrication points while equipment remains in operation.

The system incorporates a centralised electric or hydraulic pump with an integrated motor, stirring paddle and control board that records system performance and operating cycles.

Lubricant is drawn from the reservoir and delivered through primary and secondary progressive metering blocks. Precisely sized pistons then distribute controlled quantities of grease to individual friction points.

Designed for demanding industrial environments, the systems can withstand high back pressure, extreme temperatures and heavy vibration commonly encountered in mining applications.

One System for Multiple Machine Applications

The scalable Lincoln lubrication systems can serve a range of mobile equipment, from smaller machines such as skid steers to larger mining and processing equipment with more than 150 lubrication points.

Applications include:

  • Dump trucks
  • Excavators
  • Wheel loaders
  • Crushers
  • Other heavy mining and processing equipment

By maintaining continuous lubrication while machinery is operating, the systems eliminate the need for daily shutdowns for manual greasing, helping mining operations maintain production and improve equipment availability.

Longer Component Life and Lower Maintenance Costs

Accurate lubricant delivery ensures that the correct amount of grease reaches the required lubrication points, helping extend component life while reducing lubricant wastage.

Continuous lubrication during bearing rotation can also create a protective seal that helps prevent dirt and dust from entering critical components. This reduces contamination and wear, supporting longer service life for bearings, pins and bushings.

For mining operators, the resulting benefits can include lower maintenance costs, reduced lubricant consumption and improved machine reliability.

Improving Maintenance Safety

Automatic lubrication also reduces the need for maintenance personnel to access difficult-to-reach lubrication points on heavy machinery.

By removing the requirement to climb onto or work underneath equipment for routine greasing, the technology can reduce exposure to maintenance-related safety risks.

SKF South Africa Country Manager Andres Vera said the investment in Lincoln P203 technology strengthens operational reliability while delivering benefits in productivity, cost efficiency and worker safety.

SKF Regional Manager for KZN and Eastern Cape Kevin Mills added that eliminating manual greasing requirements allows machines to remain operational while ensuring precise quantities of lubricant are delivered to the correct points.

45 Systems to Be Installed

The customer, which serves Africa’s mining, construction and agricultural sectors, approached SKF in February 2026 for the supply and installation of the Lincoln lubrication systems.

SKF’s lubrication systems team completed installation of the first 20 systems in June 2026, installing them across various mobile machines within ten days.

The customer has subsequently reported improved reliability on machine pins and bushes.

Installation of the remaining 25 systems is scheduled for September and October 2026.

Local Training and Aftermarket Support

As part of the project, SKF provided training on the correct operation of the Lincoln lubrication units. The training is intended to support knowledge transfer and help the end user optimise system performance and long-term reliability.

The systems were designed and installed in South Africa, while SKF Zambia, working with its local authorised distributor Donation Africa Division, is providing aftermarket support covering lubrication system maintenance, repairs and parts supply.

The project highlights the growing role of automated lubrication and maintenance technologies in improving the reliability, safety and efficiency of mobile equipment operating in demanding African mining environments.
